WOMEN'S GOLD MEDAL GAME: #1 UBCO vs #3 VIU

UBCO women claim gold

On paper, it looked almost like a carbon copy of last year’s BCCAA gold medal match where the UBC-Okanagan Heat swept the VIU Mariners in three for the title.

Despite a number of new faces making up these teams, UBCO prevailed victorious once again claiming Provincial gold and leaving VIU with silver.

A five point run early in the first set helped the Heat make a quick head start and the team pulled out the win 25-16.  In the second, an early seven point run put the Heat ahead but the Mariners answered back racking up eight points following a well-called substitution.  UBCO’s head coach Steve Manuel called a time out to change the momentum and the Heat pulled ahead to win 25-18.  Leading all the way in the third, UBCO won the match 25-14 with a float serve that VIU failed to handle.

Players of the Match included fourth-year setter Caitlin Nyhus from UBCO and second-year middle Jacqueline Doleman from VIU.
