Second Year post/wing Chelsea McMullen rang up MVP honors for her stellar performance at the Provincial Championships this past weekend. This 5’11” product from Prince George was a power house for the defending 2008-09 champions earning three player of the game awards this weekend. In a rare occurrence, the MVP was awarded to a player from the silver medal team.

McMullen led Camosun to a 63-54 win in the quarters over Capilano where she posted an imposing 24 points and 20 rebounds. The victory advanced her team to the semi-finals to face the #1 seed, UNBC. Camosun defeated UNBC in last year’s Gold medal game but with UNBC ranked #1 coming into this tournament, Camosun would stun the Timberwolves with a 57-56 victory. McMullen tallied 12 points, 9 rebounds and 2 steals in over 38 minutes played. Camosun advanced to the provincial final where McMullen and her squad narrowly lost 69-67 to UBC Okanagan. She would amass 21 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 steals in 37 minutes. The girls from Victoria will get another crack at UBCO as they advance to the Nationals, hosted by UBCO from March 17-20th, 2010.

Fourth year guard Gill was named tournament MVP this past weekend as he helped UNBC to a Provincial Championship. Originally from Spokane, WA, Gill spent his first two years at Everett College before making his way up to UNBC last season where UNBC won Provincial Bronze and finished 4th at nationals that they hosted.

With a bye in the quarters, UNBC faced 4th seed Capilano in the Semi-Finals. Gill would score 27 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists in over 34 minutes played to help his team to a 79-69 victory. Gill was named player of the game for UNBC. With a trip back to Nationals on the line, Gill and his Timberwolves would face the Provincial host VIU Mariners, in their own building for the title. In the last weekend of BCCAA league play, VIU traveled up to Prince George to play a double header. Losing both games to UNBC, VIU was looking to avenge that trip and send the Prince George boys home with the Silver. It was not to be as UNBC defeated VIU for the third time this season, winning Provincial Gold 84-65 and a trip to the National Championships. Gill finished the game with 21 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists and 6 steals in just over 35 minutes of play. As coach Raimbault acknowledged, “Inderbir was tremendous for us at both ends of the floor this past weekend. He defended, rebounded and led the charge offensively. Derserving of the MVP honors.”

UNBC now make the trip to Calgary, Alberta hosted by SAIT as they hope to improve on their 2008-09 4th place finish.
